Professor Panchanan Mohanty

Panchanan Mohanty joined in the Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, University Hyderabad in 1990 and worked as Head, Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, Dean, Students' Welfare of University of Hyderabad and chairperson and member of a number of committees of the University. Now he is Dean, School of Humanities and heads the Centre for Endangered Languages and Mother Tongue Studies, University of Hyderabad. He has been Principal Investigator of three major projects of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India besides the endangered languages project under the Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages of Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore.

He has participated and chaired in more than 250 national and international seminars and conferences and published more than 160 papers in journals like General Linguistics, Language Policy, Language Problems and Language Planning, Journal of Professional and Academic English, Mother Tongue, Glottometrics, Indian Linguistics, International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics, Indian Journal of Linguistics, International Journal of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, Theory and Practice in Language Studies, Journal of Language and Culture, etc. He has written, edited and translated 23 books in English and Oriya besides translating 4 books to Oriya.

He was vice-president and president of Dravidian Linguistics Association, chief editor of Indian Linguistics, deputy editor and advisory board member of International Journal of Dravidian Linguistics. Now he is member of the Governing Council, International School of Dravidian Linguistics, editorial board of The Papers of Moscow State University, Series 13 (Oriental Studies), academic editor of The Asian ESP Journal, Review Editor of Glossa and a member of the editorial boards of a number of linguistics journals. He was a member of the Executive Body of Foundation for Endangered Languages, U.K. and Round Table for Protection and Preservation of Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Endangered Languages, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. He was also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Google, Inc.’s Project “An Online Collaborative Effort to Protect Global Linguistic Diversity”. He is a core Committee Member of the Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages, a project of the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. He was a member of the Government of India Delegation on “A Policy Dialogue on Multilingualism and Quality Assessment” to European Union at Brussels and Warsaw and a member of the Expert Group Meeting on “Towards UNESCO Guidelines on Language Policies: A Tool for Language Assessment and Planning”, UNESCO, Paris. He has prepared two batteries for speech audiometry in Telugu for children as well as adults.  He was recently invited by UNESCO, Paris, Smithsonian Institution, U.S.A. and University of Hawaii, U.S.A. as a member of different committees to plan for creating an international body to conserve the endangered languages of the world.
